This third book has a very small cast of characters, set in a single location and even in the way it's told, it feels as if hardly any time passes. We saw Nod and explored that strange new planet and its dangerous inhabitants, we learned about the Cephalopods and their radically different society and way of communicating. A story that was somewhat smaller in scope in my opinion, focussing on a story involving two or three species trying to make contact and failing spectacularly at that. The second book added two new species to the mix, the microbial lifeform from Nod and the Cephalopods. The parts about the humans as they darted across the universe in search of a home was the weakest part of the first novel for me. It was grand and epic and it moved at a rapid pace. The first one spanned numerous generations, we saw the rise of a society and the birth of an alliance between Humans and Spiders. The story seems infinitely smaller than the previous two novels. As they infiltrate Landfall, secrets about the planet are revealed that will change things forever for the Children of Earth. They manage to approach Imir and discover the colony. The crew has two new faces on board of their ship, Gethli and Gothli, two sort of, kind of, uplifted corvids from the planet Rourke. Now from there we meet our band of familiar faces: Portia, Bianca and Fabian are there, as is Avrana Kern and we meet with Miranda, who is from Nod, pretending to be Miranda. People talk about "Seccers" and "Watchers" almost mythical boogeymen to the residents of Landfall, or rather they're an easy scapegoat, unknown people that are responsible for food that has gone missing, failing harvests and other ills and woes. Imir isn't a nice planet and the colony isn't doing great. The story starts out on the planet Imir, where we meet a young girl who is part of a colony of humans that settled there ages ago.
